Yellow floating heart Description: This species is listed on the Michigan prohibited aquatic plant list. Popular water garden plant.

Habit: Aquatic; rooted perennial with floating leaves. Forms dense patches; grows at depths of up to 1 m (3.25 ft).

Leaves: Heart-shaped to almost round, 3-10 cm (075-4 in) long, opposite, arising on long stalks from underwater rhizomes.

Stems: Cylindrical, unbranched, sometimes producing rootlets from nodes.

Flowers: Yellow in color, 5 petals, 3-4 cm in diameter, fringed margins, held above water; blooms May through September.

Fruit and seeds: Seed pod, up to 2.5 cm long containing numerous seeds; seeds are flat, oval and about 3.5 mm long with hairy edges.

Habitat: Native to Europe and Asia. Found in lakes, ponds, slow-moving rivers and streams; grows at depths of up to 4 m (13 ft); can also survive on mudflats.

Reproduction: By its floating seed; vegetatively by plant fragments; dispersed by waterfowl.

Similar species: Variegated yellow pond-lily (Nuphar lutea).

Monitoring and rapid response: Hand-pulling and mechanical removal.
