Description: Widely used for the production of rose oil and rose water.

Habit: Deciduous; grows up to 1.5 m (5 ft).

Leaves: Grayish-green in color, 5-7 leaflets.

Stems: Covered with small spines.

Flowers: Round, globular, numerous thin overlapping petals; pink, white, dark red-purple in color; fragrant; hermaphrodite, pollinated by insects, self-fertile.

Fruit and seeds: Numerous seeds found within the fruit.

Habitat: Native to Europe. Found in woodland garden sunny edges and dappled shade.

Reproduction: By seed, softwood cutting, simple layering or hardwood cuttings.

Similar species: French rose (Rosa gallica); Musk rose (Rosa moschata); Dog rose (Rosa canina); Damask rose (Rosa damascena).
